The Institute for Permaculture and Ecovillages of the Savannah, a sustainable development organization from Brazil, has been training Haitians from Papaye Peasant Movement in the art of permaculture to help rebuild Haiti from the grassroots. Permaculture is a method of sustainable agriculture that provides a healthy means of production for both humans and the environment.
Environmental degradation is one of Haiti's biggest problems - extreme deforestation (more than 96%) has left Haiti's hills and mountains stripped bare, causing 15,000 acres of fertile topsoil to be eroded away each year. With permaculture training, the Haitians will be able to design development projects for agriculture that are not only sustainable, but will rebuild the integrity of the natural environment, all the while providing more food, firewood, water, and income.
